NODhouse is a durational art practice focused on increasing the visibility of people living North Of Delmar in St. Louis, Missouri. For decades Delmar Avenue has been the dividing line between interest and neglect, white and black, and visibility and invisibility. The area north of Delmar is devoid of visual public expression; over time, residents have learned to be quiet. The footprint of St. Louis’ established arts district extends across Delmar Avenue, but the district sponsors no art engagement north of Delmar. Six years ago, NODhouse, in response to the district’s continued exclusion of north of Delmar, became a catalyst for arts initiatives with NOD residents and businesses. NOD is both an acronym for North Of Delmar and the word “nod” itself – the gesture we use to acknowledge one another.
